Turtle Back Zoo is located in New Jersey and was opened to the public in 1963. The zoo covers 20 acres of the South Mountain Recreation Complex in the South Mountain Reservation. Originally the zoo was built to showcase the broad variety of animals that were native to the region, though today the zoo features animals from around the world.
The only continent not represented at the zoo is Antarctica. The zoo takes its name from a local rock formation, and although faced closure in 1995 is now more popular than ever attracting more than half a million visitors each year.
