Originally known as the Fleishhacker Zoo in honour of the man who founded the facility the San Francisco Zoo was opened to the public in 1929 on the site of an existing children’s playground. Many of the animals brought in to populate the new animal park were from the Golden Gate Park and included spider and rhesus monkeys as well as elephants, giraffes, zebras and buffalo.

Some of the first purpose built habitats to be constructed within the zoo were the lion house, elephant house and monkey island as well as the bear grotto an aviary and the small mammal grotto.
