The Monterey Bay Aquarium was opened to the public in 1984 and is sited on land that once housed a sardine cannery. It is a popular tourist attraction drawing in more than two million visitors every year. There have been a number of attempts over the years to build an aquarium in the region dating as far back as 1914, with recommendations for the building of such an attraction being made regularly throughout the decades.
One of the most popular exhibits at the aquarium is the kelp forest attraction which showcases more than eighty seaweed varieties, some of which grow at the rate of 4” a day.
