The Cheyenne Mountain Zoo is the only zoo in the USA which sits upon a mountainside. The facility was founded in 1926 by Spencer Penrose a local philanthropist who wanted to create a facility which would house his own private collection of exotic animals.
In 1938 he gifted the zoo to the people of Colorado Springs so that the animals could be enjoyed by all. One of the signature animals housed at the zoo is the reticulated giraffe which thrives at the facility which is now home to the largest reticulated giraffe herd in the country.
