Italian beef is thought to have been brought to the United States by a group of twelve individuals, of which Buona Beef founders Pasquale Scala and Joe Buonvoanto are thought to be a part of. The story takes place in 1925 when Italian beef was included in wedding banquets catered for by Scala’s Original Beef and Sausage Company.
Over the decades the demand for Italian beef increased as the frugality of the depression fell into history. By the 1980’s Italian Beef made it into the suburbs and there are now fifteen locations throughout Illinois serving traditional Italian beef soakers as well as catering to the wider community.
